Today we went back the CITU at stoke hospital the place where Tommy died, to discuss Tommy and get any questions answered surrounding his death. The day was quite emotional and walking onto the ward felt a bit strange, but we were met by Sarne and Dr Alexander, who were the Doctor & Nurse who looked after Tommy on the ward. First question we was asked was how we were, which is always the hardest question everyone asks. We are coping as best as we can, we have our ups and downs, but we are determined to stay strong for Tommy, because as we have said all along Tommy didn't like crying. We find talking about Tommy helps us to deal with this heartbreak we going through. We spent quite a while discussing Tommy and all the things we had done and what we have planned going forward. We told them both how eternally grateful we were that they gave us the opportunity to go to the Donna Louise Children's Hospice and experience, first hand the wonderful work they do. We then asked our niggling questions to basically put our minds at rest. As we had thought, Tommy had Meningitis B and Septicaemia, this is the strain that there is now a vaccine available for but not given to all children as the government deem it too expensive. We now want to fight for all children to have this vaccine. If it just saves one child's life and one family going through this heartache, then that's more than cost effective in our eyes. Meningitis c is now almost gone due to all the children being vaccinated. We now need to get the same for Meningitis B. Please go on line to http://www.meningitis.org/menb-open-letter and sign the petition to get this vaccination for all children. We was also told today that Tommy would not of know what was happening and that he would now have suffered, basically the toxins from the disease began to shut down his organs, His kidneys started to fail, his liver was failing which the drugs and procedures they were doing they would have recovered but unfortunately the one thing that they couldn't keep going was his heart. He was given all the medication to keep his heart beating faster but his little heart just couldn't take no more and there was nothing else that could have been done. From start to finish everyone gave there all but the little man just wasn't strong enough. But he put up a good fight. Today has put our minds at rest that he didn't suffer. Today we also picked up the Casts of his hand and foot that we had made on the day he died. These are just beautiful and very precious to us, so precious that Martin is too scared to touch them in case he drops them. They are a beautiful reminder and it may seem strange but holding them is like holding his hand. Tommy will always be with us in everything we do and we will always keep his memory alive.
